Short answer

Looker Studio became Data Studio in April 2026. It is still free, and Pro is $9 per user per project per month. Without a data team, compare Power BI, Tableau, Metabase, Databox, Zoho Analytics, Google Sheets, and done-for-you builds on who builds it, what each reader pays, and how a reader traces a number to its rows.

You built a dashboard in Looker Studio, and it mostly works. Then your manager points at one number and asks where it came from, and you end up in the source sheet explaining a filter by hand. Next week, the same question.

If nobody on your team is a data engineer, the right tool depends less on chart types than on 3 questions: who builds and maintains it, what each reader has to pay, and whether a reader can trace a number back to the rows behind it. This guide compares Looker Studio (now called Data Studio) with 7 alternatives on those terms.

Is Looker Studio still free in 2026?

Yes, under its original name. On April 11, 2026, Google announced that Looker Studio is going back to its original name, Data Studio, and said existing reports, data sources, and users move over with no action on your part.

As of October 17, 2026, Google's pricing page lists Data Studio at no charge for creators and report viewers. The paid tier, Data Studio Pro, is $9 per user per project per month and adds support and team content management.

  • Fits: teams whose data already sits in Google Sheets or other Google products. Google also lists over 1,300 Community Connectors.
  • Setup effort: low for a single sheet.
  • Tracing a number: while editing a report, right-click a chart and choose Show underlying data. It lists the dimensions and metrics behind that chart, 25 rows per page.

The gap to watch is explanation. A scorecard that says 412 shows the number, and the report shows when the data was last refreshed, but not which rows counted, which were left out, or the last date the data covers. If your manager needs that, you write it into a text box and keep it current by hand.

What should you compare when you don't have a data team?

For a team without a data engineer, 4 things matter more than feature lists:

  • Who builds it. You, a colleague, or someone you pay.
  • What readers pay. Some tools charge each person who views a report. Others don't.
  • Setup effort. How much you have to learn before the first page is useful.
  • Tracing. Whether a reader can get from a total to the rows behind it without asking you.

Reader costs add up. Say 1 person builds and 4 people read. At list prices, that's $0 in Data Studio, $70 a month in Power BI (all 5 need a Pro license, paid yearly), and $135 a month in Tableau Cloud Standard (1 Creator at $75 plus 4 Viewers at $15, billed annually).

How do the 7 alternatives compare?

Starting prices are from each official pricing page as of October 17, 2026. Prices change, so check the page before you buy. Setup effort is our estimate for a team with no data engineer. The Every Number row is a one-time pilot build from one spreadsheet, not ongoing software. Planned prices after launch are $29 a month (Solo) and $99 a month (Team), and nothing is billed until launch.

Power BI, Tableau, or Metabase: which BI tool fits?

Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is Microsoft's BI tool. A free account lets you build reports for your own use, but sharing needs Pro at $14 per user per month or Premium Per User at $24, both paid yearly. Microsoft's licensing docs say only Pro users can consume other Pro users' content unless it sits in Premium capacity, so your manager needs a license too.

  • Fits: Microsoft 365 teams with one person willing to own the data model.
  • Setup effort: medium to high.
  • Tracing a number: Show as a table lists the data behind a visual, and Show data point as a table lists what sits behind one bar or point. Microsoft notes that Show as a table isn't supported for Card and KPI visuals, the single-number tiles.

Tableau

Tableau Cloud Standard lists Creator at $75, Explorer at $42, and Viewer at $15 per user per month, billed annually on an annual contract. Every deployment needs at least one Creator license. Since July 2026, Standard and other editions can also buy capacity-based Viewer Blocks instead of per-user Viewer licenses.

  • Fits: teams that want deep visual exploration and can commit for a year.
  • Setup effort: high for a first-time builder.
  • Tracing a number: View Data opens a Summary tab with the aggregated values behind a mark, plus tabs with the full underlying data, if your permissions allow it.

Metabase

Metabase is open source. Self-hosted, it is free with unlimited users, and you run the server. The Starter plan is $100 a month on monthly billing with the first 5 users included, then $6 per user per month.

  • Fits: teams whose data already lives in a SQL database. Metabase says you can write SQL or explore just by clicking.
  • Setup effort: medium.
  • Tracing a number: click an aggregated value and choose View these records. This works on questions built with the query builder, not native SQL, and needs permission to query the underlying data.

When do Databox or Zoho Analytics fit better?

Databox

Databox builds KPI dashboards from connected tools and lists 130+ native integrations, including CRMs, ad networks, spreadsheets, and databases. The Free plan covers 1 user, 3 data sources, and 1 dashboard. Analyst is $71 a month for 1 user and Team Core is $199 a month for 3 users, both billed annually.

  • Fits: teams whose numbers come from SaaS tools such as a CRM or an ad platform.
  • Setup effort: low to medium.
  • Tracing a number: Databox says you can click a metric to drill into the row-level data behind it, and it lists data lineage on every plan. Its help center notes that some integrations deliver only predefined metrics without raw records, so there may be no rows to open.

Zoho Analytics

Zoho Analytics is a full BI tool priced by users and rows. The Free plan includes 2 users and 10,000 rows. Basic is US$24 a month billed annually for 2 users and 0.5 million rows. Read-only viewers are an add-on starting at US$80 a month, billed yearly, for 25 viewers.

  • Fits: teams that want a full BI tool at a lower entry price.
  • Setup effort: medium.
  • Tracing a number: in View Mode, click a data point and choose View Underlying Data.

Is Google Sheets on its own enough?

Often, for a while. Anyone with a Google Account can create in Sheets, and Google Workspace Business Starter is $7 per user per month with a 1-year commitment.

  • Fits: one source sheet, a handful of numbers, and readers who will open a spreadsheet.
  • Setup effort: low at first, rising with every copied tab.
  • Tracing a number: click a cell to read its formula, or right-click and choose Show edit history. Google notes that changes made by formulas, and added or deleted rows, may not appear there.

The risk is quiet drift. Say this week's export arrives with a Total row at the bottom. Your SUM now counts every amount twice, and nothing on the page says so. That cause and 8 others are covered in why dashboard numbers don't match.

When should someone else build it?

If the problem is time and trust rather than software, a done-for-you build can be the shorter path. We compare hiring a freelancer, with marketplace rates, in spreadsheet vs BI tool vs done-for-you.

Every Number, which publishes this guide, runs a $99 concierge pilot. After a free application and a 15-minute call about who reads the dashboard, if the sheet fits, you pay $99, send one spreadsheet (Excel, Google Sheets, or CSV), and get the dashboard in 5 business days. It has 5 to 7 metrics with plain-English definitions you approve first, a receipt behind every number, every left-out row listed with the reason, and the date the data runs through. You get a full refund if it can't be built or if you cancel before building starts. See how it works and a sample weekly KPI dashboard.

It is not a fit today if you need live connectors, more than one data source, or a tool your team explores on its own. Uploading files yourself and the dashboard app are planned for after launch. It's also not a fit if your review requires SOC 2 or ISO 27001, because Every Number is a small studio at the pilot stage with neither. The security page explains where data lives.

Frequently asked questions

Is Looker Studio the same product as Data Studio?

Yes. Google's documentation says the Looker Studio product name returned to its original name, Data Studio, in April 2026. You don't need to update your reports, and lookerstudio.google.com redirects to datastudio.google.com.

What is the cheapest way to share a dashboard with a manager?

At list prices, Data Studio is available at no charge for creators and report viewers, and anyone with a Google Account can create in Sheets. Power BI needs a Pro license for each reader unless your organization has Premium capacity. Tableau needs Viewer access for each reader: a Viewer license, $15 per user per month on Standard, billed annually, or, since July 2026, capacity-based Viewer Blocks.

What happened to Rows?

Rows, a spreadsheet tool for teams, announced on February 22, 2026 that Superhuman had agreed to acquire it. The same post said Rows.com would fully wind down on May 31, 2026, so it isn't included here.

Can Every Number connect to my tools directly?

Not today. The pilot works from one spreadsheet that you send by email or through a shared link you control. If you need live connections to a CRM or an ad platform, a connected tool such as Data Studio, Databox, or Power BI fits better.
